Caring for greasy hair – how do I treat it?

woman

Girls,

Do you know that oily hair needs constant moisturising? Over-drying oily hair has many negative consequences. In this post, you will learn about my daily hair care routine and how I struggle with my oily scalp. Can oily hair be shampooed every day?

Our entire body and scalp are covered with sebaceous glands. The amount of sebum produced depends on various factors. Sometimes genetics are responsible. My complexion is oily, which is why I have oily hair.

Do you have a normal complexion and oily hair at the same time? It is possible that you are taking the wrong care of your scalp. The scalp usually becomes oily when it lacks moisture. Then the sebaceous glands produce an excessive amount of sebum to protect the skin from drying out. Mechanical stimulation of the sebaceous glands by excessive touching of the hair or by wearing headwear also has a great influence on sebum secretion. Oily hair can also be a symptom of hormonal changes, such as menopause or puberty in teens. If you notice such symptoms, you should seek advice from your doctor.

Oily hair characteristics

  1. Shiny around the hairline and can look unsightly, and stringy.
  2. Flat, heavy, and without volume.
  3. Needs to be shampooed every day – otherwise they are shiny.
  4. After touching the scalp, a greasy layer can be noticed.

IMPORTANT!

The work of the sebaceous glands is intensified by, for example, spicy food, chronic stress, neurological diseases, hormones or chlorinated water.

Fighting oily hair

The main thing is to shampoo your hair whenever it needs it. It is a myth that you should not do it every day. However, use a shampoo for daily use that is gentle and does not contain unnecessary silicones. Wash your scalp once or twice a week with a stronger shampoo. From time to time, you can also reach for a dry shampoo to lift the strands at the roots.

I always go for natural, herbal beauty products. Beetroot, peppermint, black radish, aloe vera or nettle cleanse the scalp really perfectly. It would be best to choose a shampoo that is as neutral as possible and does not interfere with the work of the sebaceous glands.

Don’t forget your hygiene! Clean your hairbrush regularly. Wash your straightener and any other hair styling tools that come into direct contact with your hair. Bed linen and towels should also be changed frequently.

To prevent greasy hair, I only comb my hair strands in the morning and evening. I also try not to touch my hair at all during the day. In the beginning, it was hard for me to eliminate this habit, but over time I learned and now I don’t touch them at all. It is pointless to add volume to your hair with your fingers because such a procedure only increases sebum production.

If you have to blow dry your hair, always use a cool breeze and keep the hair dryer away from your head. It would actually be best to buy a hair dryer with an air ionisation feature. Hair does not like heat, so use only lukewarm water even when rinsing your hair. Too much heat contributes to an increased amount of sebum on the head.

I recommend herbal treatments because detoxifying the body reduces an oily face and scalp.

What are your favourite remedies for oily hair? I am convinced that I don’t know all the methods and you will surprise me. 🙂
