Why does make-up smudge?
When I just started my journey with make-up, I asked the same question. Why indeed does my make-up smudge? I thought that to blame are only my poor-quality cosmetics, so I tested a few new things. It didn’t help because – as I learned later on – how long-lasting the make-up will be, depends on more than one factor. What are those factors?
- Make-up cosmetics that don’t match the skin type.
- Having oily skin because sebum aids make-up smudging.
- Cosmetics are applied in the wrong order.
- Given cosmetics are applied using the wrong method.
- Make-up is not correctly finished and fixed.
- The skin condition is poor, e.g. the skin is very dry.
These are obviously only the most important reasons for smudging the make-up. Remember that bad final effect can also be caused by being in a rush.
My methods for long-lasting make-up.
Allow me to give away a few of my methods as to how you can fix your make-up. These will not be make-up tips in the form of ‘buy expensive lipstick cause it doesn’t smudge’. Nonsense. Entirely different things have an impact on making your make-up last longer – here’s my list of tricks.
#1 METHOD
Quick exfoliation before make-up.
Before you even get to the make-up part, you should start with an exfoliator. You can quickly set up some homemade exfoliator using sugar and oil (you can also add some moisturizing honey). I often go for exfoliating face wash. It is important to make this sort of express exfoliation before you start the make-up because it will help you get rid of dry skin patches, it will make your skin smooth and revitalize it. It is a good beginning to the final effect of long-lasting make-up that does not make all the dry skin to stand out.
#2 METHOD
Sweet almond oil as a make-up base.
I don’t like using a regular make-up base because I feel like there are too many cosmetic layers on my face. However, you can prepare your skin for the make-up by using lightweight oil for face, e.g. my favorite is Nanoil Sweet Almond Oil. Just 2-3 drops massaged in the face can restore skin with suppleness, help it maintain proper hydration and get rid of dry skin patches. Application of make-up to prepared this way skin will make the foundation last longer and skin will not become dry too fast. The option for the lazy bones out there: sometimes I add the oil to the foundation in order not to waste time for separate application of cosmetics.
#3 METHOD
A sponge or a flat top brush instead of fingers.
How many of you apply the foundation with the fingers? It makes no sense because all the foundation stays on the fingers instead of the skin. That is why I use the flat top brush which allows me to apply foundation in a smaller amount while gaining the same coverage and making the make-up last longer. The secret is in stamping the face with a brush instead of spreading it. I apply some foundation in a few spots of the face then stamp it using the flat part of the brush – thanks to it foundation is spread evenly while being pressed in the skin. It is a method for a long-lasting make-up endorsed by professional make-up artists.
#4 METHOD
Mineral, rise, bamboo powder or… flour.
You cannot expect your make-up to last for long if you do not fix it in place with something. I don’t mean any professional make-up fixers (honestly? I don’t like those). I mean translucent powder that allows easy make-up finish. It absorbs humidity and excess sebum so make-up does not run down the face. I usually use rice powder with Ecocert, but you can also use something more expensive, like Mary Kay mineral powder. If you run out of the powder… some potato flour will work just as well as the best mattifying powder!
